About Black Opals
Black Opal (natural Type 1 opal) - is regarded as the most valuable and rearrest opal in the world. About 90% of the Worlds Black Opal comes from Lightning Ridge New South Wales Australia. It gets its name from the body tone which is the back of the opal also called common opal or potch. The darker the body tone the more valuable the opal is because it gives debt “kick” in the colour bar( also called precious opal), which sits on top of the common opal. The colour bar can consist of any one colour or any mix of colours. The body tone can be from light grey to dark black. A solid black opal got 6-10% water content. Black opal is mined as seam opal or nobby (nuggets) opal.
